Jelly Man Kelly

My friend Kami posted this on facebook today and I instantly traveled back in time. There I was, a pig-tailed first-grader, in my favorite purple overalls, criss-cross applesauce in front of our t.v., and giggling uncontrollably. What a fun song. Thanx for the chance to reminisce, Kami!

Random and Touching

Here's a picture I came across today that really struck a note with me. What a beautiful portrayal of a mother and son. No fake smiles. No stiff expressions. You can literally see the refuge they find in each other. It looks as though, THIS was "home." This mother, I've come to find was the empress of France. Empress Eugénie and her six-year-old son, Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonapartein. She was the wife of Napoleon III. This photograph was taken by Benjamin Delessert, 1862.

Tenure 30 January 1853 – 11 January 1871. My friend Wikipedia told me. . ."When the Second French Empire was overthrown after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), the empress and her husband took refuge in England, and settled at Chislehurst, Kent. After his death in 1873, and that of her son in 1879, she moved in 1885 to Farnborough, Hampshire, and to her villa "Cyrnos" (ancient Greek name of Corsica), that she had built at Cap-Martin between Menton and Nice, where she lived in retirement, abstaining from all interference in French politics. After the deaths of her husband and son her health started to deteriorate. Her physician recommended she visit Bournemouth which was, in Victorian times, famed as a health spa resort. During her visit a groundskeeper lit hundreds of little tea candles in the Bournemouth gardens to light her way to the sea at night. This event is still commemorated annually by the lighting of candle displays in the Bournemouth gardens every summer. The former empress died in July 1920 at the age of 94."

FYI her full name was María Eugenia Ignacia Augustina de Palafox de Guzmán Portocarrero y Kirkpatrick! And you thought my name was long ;)

Complete New - New Moon Trailer and A Completely Hilarious Spoof

I cannot wait to SEE THIS MOVIE!

HIH-LARIOUS!

So You Think You're A Witch?

My mom, sister, and I LOVE Gardner Village. We have gone to their "Witches Night Out" event the last two years, and plan to do it again and again. Well, last year I found a pair of old welding goggles to use with my witch costume. They looked ridiculous, and were great. Well, this year, my mom told me about this competition GV was having called, "So You Think You're A Witch." "Rochelle, you should do it! You could win!" Skeptically, I looked into applying and went for it. I had to come up with a character and was immediately reminded of Helga in Showtime, and all those Papa Schultzisms.

Helga Recipe:
1 (once disheveled, now resurrected) red wig.
1 uber cool stick broom.
1 brushed up accent from college days.
1 large bottle of elixer to help Helga "sing".
1 ridiculous, but rhyming nonetheless, spell.
1 inside out green sundress.
1 brown thrift store tablecloth cape.
1 pair of holey black and white socks.
2 Battered New Balance trainers.
1 used black fanny pack.
1 (twig from Will's stick collection) wand.
1 super supportive hubby.
3 kids/helpful critics.

The contest was a RIOT! Helga busted out some serious dance moves. Dangerous, I know! We were judged on our outfit, our cackle, our talent, a spell, and interview. Everyone did such a great job. SO MUCH WORK WENT INTO THE SONGS AND SPELLS AND COSTUMES. I don't know how it happened, but I WON! I was so surprised I couldn't stop laughing! I won two tickets to Witch A Palooza's opening night and a 25$ Gift Certificate to Archibalds. Throughout October my witchy attendants and I will make six appearances. CAN'T WAIT!!! All in all, I realized how much I LOVE to make people laugh and I look forward to doing it this October at Gardner Village. :) Mom, thanks so much for getting me started!

Family Time

This weekend my sister and her family and my mom and dad came up for a little family reunion. Unfortunately, my brothers and their families were unable to come and were greatly missed. Man, we sure had fun. Rob prepared for the festivities by going on a fishing trip. We celebrated a great man's birthday. . . Happy 62nd Birthday Dad! On Saturday morning: Delynn, Mom and I went to Midway's Swiss Days to see what that was all about. We were in heaven! All I can say is next year, we want to shop Friday AND Saturday. There was so much to see! Well, back at the house, Mom had a slew of activities planned for the kids. The theme was secret agents so we all had secret agent names. I was agent LaFawnduh.

Picture this if you can: A bubble machine that produces bubbles that engulf ones entire body (grown-ups and kids alike, Aunt Janean, you're a genius!). Kids tip-toeing and crawling around my front room in an attempt to avoid a web of lasers (red yarn strung every which way). Target practice in the backyard (A pinata). Super Spy Sneaking lessons (tips on how to get from here to there without being seen). Mom and Dad's huge tent in the backyard for the kids to play in. Water Fun (A Slip 'n' Slide, two kid pools and a massive water fight). Walk to Cascade Springs. Picnic at the park. Spontaneous naps. Delicious Food (A dutch oven feast, pulled pork sandwiches, chorizo con huevos etc.). Pajama Movie Night (everyone selected 5 minutes of their favorite movie to share with the crowd). We had a schmorgasborg of clips ranging from Quest For Camelot, Twilight, Elf, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Funny Girl, Spirit, Hannah Montana, Nacho Libre, Presto, Rocky Balboa, to Platoon (that clip was watched after the kids went to bed, sorry Rob ;)). Delynn's 6 week old Dachsund puppy romping around and napping in many eager arms. Night Games (Using flashlights and their new sneaking skills, the kids played hide and sneak in the backyard).

We had all of that and MORE! The whole weekend was a riot, and between the chaos, the mayhem, and the giggles, I think the best thing that was shared, was time. Unforgettable! Good job, Mom!

Already???

Will turned 5 on Monday. (HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILL!!!) On Monday night, I noticed his bottom tooth was leaning forward quite a bit. After a wiggle and a gasp I realized, "It's loose!" He's 5 people! A little early isn't it?

Today, out of curiosity, I tried wiggling some of his other teeth. Total number of teeth loose. . . 3!!! What's up with that? He hasn't even started Kindergarten yet! Sheesh. Kid's these days. . . growing up too fast and . . . losing teeth.

Kids Say The Darndest Things Part 2

05-07-09 This morning, after he'd given the usual 5 second prayer, I told Will to pray again, but this time for something he's never prayed for. The immediate result; "Please bless the groundhogs, that they won't see their shadow."

And in Will's prayer tonight he said; "Please bless all the grandmas that they'll be in the Holy Ghost's heart."

04-25-09 Ben and I were enjoying dinner with Nick and Amanda at Joy Luck. I waited outside the restroom as Ben answered nature's call. When he came out, I asked him,
"Did you wash your hands?" His said, "Wow, look at that picture! That guy looks a lot wierder than that lady."
"Ben, did you wash your hands?" "When I went in that bathroom, its like I was in chinese!"
A third time, I persisted, "Ben, did you wash your hands?" Acknowledging his defeat, he shrugged his shoulders and went back in . . . to wash his hands.

04-21-09 It should be noted that Will said, "Yes" to tomatoes during sandwich prep and that this conversation randomly took place two hours after we ate lunch.

Will casually said, "I don't love you anymore. Mom. . . I don't love you anymore." Trying not to laugh, I dramatically asked, "Why don't you love me anymore?" "I like you, I just don't love you. . . because you put tomatoes on my sandwich and I don't like tomatoes." In a comforting tone he reassured me, "But I like you, I like you. I just don't love you."

04-10-09 Today, Will told Alessandra, "I'm Captain Courage, that means I'm a cool kid."

04-01-09 Before I walked out the door for mutual, I said my goodbyes and quietly told Alfonso, "Goodbye, Love." Will came running up to me and said, "Mommy, I want to tell you something, but in your ear." Then in a whisper he said, "Goodbye, Love Girl."

03-27-09 Today Will said, "I got a crush on you, Mom." Two hours later, "I got a crush on you huh, Mom." I asked him, "what does it mean to have a crush on someone?" He immediately said, "It means they're pretty! I have a crush on Allie too. I want her to be my girlfriend."

03-12-09 While making Tomato soup with Will, I noticed he was about to stick his tiger slap bracelet in the pot. "I don't think that's a good idea, Will." Will responded, "Yeah, then it would be Slap Bracelet Soup, huh?"

03-11-09 Today Spencer brilliantly suggested that we "buy a whole bunch of green construction paper and cover the whole house for St. Patrick's Day." I said, "Yeah, and then we could make the house pink for Easter!" Spencer immediately responded, "I don't think pink would suit most of the people in this house."

03-07-09 Tonight Will fervently prayed, "Please bless everyone to get a Power Ranger costume. Make mine red."

03-05-09 Holding up our recently read copy of 'Green Eggs and Ham,' Will told me, "I'm gonna call this book, Green Eggs and Sausage."

02-25-09 Will urgently announced on the intercom, "Mom, I have something to tell you." Anticipating a problem with toys or the Wii, I asked, "What is it Will?" In his softest sweetest voice, he said, "Uh, I love you."

02-19-09 After telling the boys about the new addition to the family, Spencer asked, "Can we order a girl?" I explained to them that Heavenly Father will decide whether he'll send a girl or boy. Will announced, "I'm going to pray to Heavuhly Fadder for a boy." I thought he intended to do it later until I noticed that he had his arms folded, and eyes closed. He quickly began, "Heavuhly Fadder, please make the baby a boy. . ."

02-16-09 After spending time in time out, Will's attitude changes from night to day and quite proud of himself, he exclaims, "Mom, I KEEPED THE COMMANDMENTS!"

02-13-09 While eating his jelly sandwich, Will pauses and says, "Mom, do Jellyfish eat jelly?"

02-13-09 As Spencer was sleeping I overheard him say, "Don't use that tone with me, missy!"

02-11-09 In Ben's prayer he said, ". . . and please bless Rochelle, that she will be happy forever." A week later Ben prays, "Please bless Rochelle that she will have a happy life."

02-10-09 After watching the movie, "Meet the Robinsons" Spencer was sketching some of his own inventions when he asked, "Mom, do you know how to make a time machine?" To his dismay, my answer was no.

02-09-09 In school, Will was officially recognized for being a good helper. He got a neat letter from the teacher and a token to exchange in the office for a prize. In the car he told me, "I be'd a good man at preschool today." What did you do to be a good man, Will? "Cuz I was nice tah people."

02-06-09 While trying to open the package of a little green Jolly Rancher, Will explained, "I wanna see if it's seaweed."

02-06-09 In the car, Will announced, "I like being alive, Mom."

01-26-09 While building a huge fort at Grandma's house, Spencer told Will, "We need this pillow to staple-ize it." Will, as usual, agreed, "Yeah, we need that pillow to staple-ize it!"

01-09-09 On our way to comb his hair in the bathroom, Will exclaimed, "Ouch!!! My broken heart!" "Why is your heart broken, Will?" "Uhhh. . . . . . . . . because I can't walk very well."

01-01-09 While saying the prayer Will said, "Heavenly Father, please bless the a's, b's, p's and w's"
